Repairing a Dent in Your Car With a Stud Welder

Use a stud welder to remove a dent

Expensive repair; easy fix!

A dent in the body of your car can be an excessively expensive repair, especially for something that is purely aesthetic. If you have a stud welder on hand, there is an easy fix for large dents in your car. Sunbelt Stud Welding will explain how its done!

Step 1: Clean off the surface of your car

Stud welding only works when it is done directly on metal. Therefore, you will need to remove the paint from the dented area before you can weld. It is important to clean the surface of the paint before removing it to ensure that there are no contaminants. We recommend using car soap and water to rinse the surface. Then go in with wax and grease remover to wipe away any remaining contaminants.

Step 2: Remove the paint from the rented area

This is probably the most difficult part of the process. There are two ways to remove the paint if you do not have an automated machine to do it: either use a chemical paint remover or sandpaper. Sanding is naturally more labor intensive but chemical paint remover requires more preparation because it can easily spread to other parts of the car and make a mess.

Step 3: Weld the studs

You want to weld the studs onto the surface of the dent. Pick studs that are easy to pull just in case the weld isn’t enough to fix the dent. This way you can tug on them later to fully pull out the dent. You want to weld studs the least dented part first and work your way towards the parts of the metal with the deepest dent. Sometimes a dent can push up some parts of the metal sheet; tap those raised parts with a hammer as you pull.

Step 4: Remove the studs

Now its time to cut the studs and grind them down so that the metal sheet is smooth again. Now you can paint the surface again!
