Stud Welding is a type of spot welding that uses a bolt, or a specially designed nut, to weld onto a

fed into a spot welder; and the weld nuts have a flange that features small nubs that are melted to
form the weld. Finally, the studs have an unthreaded area that is also used to form the weld during
the process.

These welders work by creating an electric arc between an electrode and the base metal, melting it at the welding point. This type of stud welding equipment can either utilize direct or alternating currents; and may also use consumable or non-consumable electrodes. Arc studs range from a #8 to 1 1/4” diameter, and may include lengths that vary from 3/8” to 60”. These studs are usually loaded on the weld end with an flux ball that is constructed of aluminum, aiding the arc welding process.
