Stud Welding Equipment: Choosing the Right Stud Welding Tools

Welding has come a long way in the past few years, and innovation in engineering design as well as application techniques has resulted in a newer, more effective process than traditional metal welding. Stud Welding is a type of spot welding that uses a bolt, or a specially designed nut, to weld onto a different piece of metal. Welders may use stud welding equipment to apply bolts that are automatically fed into a spot welder; and the weld nuts have a flange that features small nubs that are melted to form the weld. Finally, the studs have an unthreaded area that is also used to form the weld during the process.

If the process of stud welding seems as if it is appropriate for your company’s application, you will likely need to consider the purchase of the right stud welding tools. Among the more common equipment used are the following:

Capacitor Discharge (CD) Welders:

This type of welder discharges CD weld studs that range from 14 gauges to 3/8 inch in diameter. CD welders have what is known as a “tip” on the weld end of the stud welding equipment, which serves two distinct purposes. First, the tip acts as a timing device that keeps the stud off of the base materials. Secondly, the tip disintegrates, becoming a molten metal that helps solidify the CD weld to the base material, when the trigger is pulled on the gun.

Arc Stud Welders:

Another category of stud welding tools is the arc stud welder. These welders work by creating an electric arc between an electrode and the base metal, melting it at the welding point. This type of stud welding equipment can either utilize direct or alternating currents; and may also use consumable or non-consumable electrodes. Arc studs range from a #8 to 1 1/4” diameter, and may include lengths that vary from 3/8” to 60”. These studs are usually loaded on the weld end with an flux ball that is constructed of aluminum, aiding the arc welding process. Many welders prefer arc welding because of its low capital and running costs, which is why an arc stud welder is a staple of arc welding equipment.
